Germany Replaces F126 Frigate Program with MEKO Frigates

On June 24, 2026, the German Ministry of Defense completely terminated the US$11 billion (EUR 10 billion) F126 frigate program. While Berlin initially explored salvaging the program by transferring the prime contractor role from Dutch shipbuilder Damen to Rheinmetall’s NVL division, a ministry review revealed the move would push total costs over US$20 billion (EUR 18 billion). The Ministry scrapped the F126 program entirely and pivoted to a streamlined US$13. 2 billion (EUR 11. 6 billion) procurement of up to eight MEKO A-200 DEU frigates from ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). With this decision, the German Navy drastically minimizes developmental risk to swiftly restore its North Atlantic deterrence posture.

Finland Expands Military Support for Ukraine Through PURL Initiative

On June 25, 2026, Finland announced an additional US$45 million (EUR40 million) contribution to the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which supports Ukraine’s defense needs. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo revealed the new package at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdansk. Finnish officials stated that the funding will help strengthen Ukraine’s air defense capabilities as Russia continues attacks on civilian areas. The PURL initiative was introduced in July 2025 by the United States and NATO to coordinate defense material support for Ukraine. European allies and Canada are the primary source of funding for this initiative and will focus on purchasing military equipment from the U. S. to deliver to Ukraine.
