The Super Hornet conducted its first combat mission on Nov. 6, 2002, when F/A-18Es operating from the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN during their first operational cruise participated in air strikes near Al Kut over the southern Iraq no-fly zone as part of Operation Southern Watch. During the same cruise, Super Hornets flew missions over Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
