The EMPAR is a multifunctional radar -- i.e., a surveillance, acquisition and tracking 3-D system. It is part of the Eurosam's FSAF ( Famille de Systemes Antiaeriens Futurs) missile system program. Plans were also set for EMPAR to be used as the primary radar for the SAAM-1 (Sol-Air-Anti-Miss ile), the Italian navy's point defense missile system.
