The French-German ANF (Anti-Navire Futur) program began as a collaboration between Aerospatiale and Messerschmitt-Boelkow-Blohm (MBB) known as ANS (Anti-Naviere Supersonique). Replacing the cancelled tripartite ASSM, there were plans for the ANS to supplant the Exocet and Kormoran anti-ship missiles . After another name change to Asura, the developmental designation became ANF.
