The Infrared imagery Sidewinder tail-controlled (IRIS-T) air-to-air missile (AAM) is a medium-range infrared homing missile. It was originally intended as a replacement for the AIM-9 Sidewinder. Following several different changes in designers and participating nations, Germany assumed the lead in producing the IRIS-T (see "Status," below, for more details).
The IRIS-T is divided into five sections, from front to back: guidance, fuze, warhead, motor and tail control.
