The M777 lightweight 155-mm howitzer (LW155) was developed independently by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd. (VSEL, now part of BAE) to meet a potential market for a lightweight, towed 155-mm howitzer. Originally targeted at the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps quickly became interested and it was developed under a joint Marine Corps/Army program.
