The British L23A1 76-mm rifled gun is mounted in the Alvis 76-mm turret and first entered service as the main armament of the Scorpion CVR(T) armored reconnaissance vehicle.
It has a semi-automatic vertical sliding breech-block and a plain, rifled barrel. Firing is electro-mechanically by solenoid or mechanically by foot pedal. It is a development of the earlier L5A1, a slightly longer and heavier gun that was mounted in the Saladin 6 x 6 wheeled armored car.
