As the E-6A Hermes, this aircraft replaced the EC-130 in early 1990s in the TACAMO (Take Charge And Move Out) role of providing very-low frequency (VLF) radio relay to strategic missile submarines at sea. The E-6 later combined TACAMO with the airborne launch control system (ALCS) flights flown by older EC-135 Looking Glass aircraft in a series of upgrades that led to its redesignation as the E-6B Mercury.
