The Algerian navy was established following independence in 1962. It is responsible for maritime patrol and search-and-rescue (SAR) operations in the Mediterranean Sea. 

The navy is organized into three regional commands: Western, Central and Eastern. 

A local industrial base, including a dry dock, can contribute to construction and repairs but foreign industry provides the bulk of the fleet.
