This attack submarine design was originally intended as the successor to the Improved LOS ANGELES (SSN-751) class for the U.S. Navy. However, the end of the Cold War, the high costs of the design and the change in operational warfare environments (from deep water to shallow) resulted in only three units being built, rather than the 30 once 30 planned.
