The South African MANTHATISI-class submarines are based on the German Type 209 design. These boats replaced the obsolete SPEAR-class submarines, the last of which was taken out of South African service in November 2003. The Type 209 attack submarines have been built by Germany for export in several subtypes (e.g., Type 1200 is the 1,200-ton version).
