This is the third generation of French SSBNs; these boats are the largest submarines in French service. They replaced the LE FOUDROYANT-class SSBNs. Originally, the class was planned as five boats, but the fifth unit was canceled in September 1992. The subs are rated as SNLE-NG, which stands for Sous Marines Lance Engins-Nouvelle Generation.
