The DARTER was built to an improved TANG (SS/AGSS 563)-class design. The DARTER and previous TANG class had the hull form, large batteries, streamlined superstructure, snorkel breathing device, and other features of the German Type XXI submarine, a highly advanced undersea craft that went to sea in 1945.
