The first seven units were ordered on May 5, 1990, as replacements for the Vietnam-era PBR design. A second order of seven was ordered in June 1992, with a total of 18 more authorized in the FY 1992 and FY 1993 programs. The first seven were placed in service on July 31, 1990, and the second seven in 1991. All the Swiftships-built units were completed in 1994.
