The CAPE EDMONT was purchased for use with the Ready Reserve Force (RRF). It was overhauled and modified before entering service. She was upgraded to the RRF on April 16, 1987.

She has a 220-ton capacity single stern ramp measuring 105 ft (32 m) long and 23 ft (7.0 m) wide.
