The BRAUNSCHWEIG class is a modified version of the popular MEKO A German corvette design. The ship is intended for extended littoral combat missions. It was originally planned as a class of 15 corvettes to replace the Type 143, 143A and 148 combat patrol craft (PTGs). Due to program delays, the class was cut to five in November 2000.
