Vessels in this class were originally designed for service as amphibious command ships (LCC), but they now also operate as fleet command ships and as the headquarters for multi-service Joint Task Forces (JTF). They were originally classified as amphibious force flagships (AGC), then reclassified as LCC on Jan. 1, 1969.
