The BERTHOLF-class national security cutters were originally part of Project Deepwater, the $8 billion effort to recapitalize the Coast Guard's seagoing assets. Due to a variety of problems, Project Deepwater was ultimately terminated in January 2012, with the Coast Guard taking over as lead systems integrator for all acquisition projects.
