These hospital ships are former SAN CLEMENTE-class tankers that have been fully converted to hospital ships. The ships were converted by the builder, National Steel and Shipbuilding Yard, San Diego, Calif. They became the first ships of the AH type in U.S. service since the SANCTUARY (AH-17), the last of the HAVEN class, was decommissioned in March 1974.
