The amphibious ships of the WHIDBEY ISLAND class were constructed as replacements for the THOMASTON (LSD-28) class , being designed to provide the capability to carry air cushion landing craft (LCAC). The LSD-41s were originally intended to be a near repeat of the earlier ANCHORAGE (LSD-36) class, but they developed with a much different design.
