The AMERICA-class amphibious assault ships replace the final four TARAWA-class vessels. The last TARAWA-class amphibious ship was decommissioned in March 2015. The AMERICA and TRIPOLI are optimized for aviation operations and do not have a well deck. Flight 1 vessels will have a well deck along with other modifications (see "Variants," below, for more information). The AMERICA is based on a modified MAKIN ISLAND (LHD-8) design.
