The CHARLES DE GAULLE replaced the aircraft carrier CLEMENCEAU. The new design was based on the CLEMENCEAU design, but adapted to fit the largest graving dock at the shipbuilding yard. For a CVN it is quite small, due to the relatively small size of the graving dock (although it is the largest in France); the ship carries half the air group of a U.S. NIMITZ- class carrier.
