The DSTA 3 was an active sonobuoy that detected and localized submarines through the use of a miniaturized active sonar unit. The DSTA also exploited the Doppler effect to determine the target's approximate speed.
The system contained a UHF receiver with several channels that allowed the sonar transmitter to be turned on or off from the monitoring aircraft and a VHF transmitter that relayed data to the aircraft.
