The AN/SSQ-79 steered vertical line array (SVLA) was a deep-searching, passive sonobuoy with a long-line array of omni-directional hydrophones sending data through a digital up-link. A hydrophone would have been located at the array phase center provides bearing data. Unlike the SSQ-77 vertical line array DIFAR (VLAD), the SSQ-79 would have allowed the launching aircraft to set or steer the direction of the buoy's search.
