The AN/SSQ-50 was a command active sonobuoy system (CASS) used to localize a previously detected target. It operated in any one of four sonar frequencies and communicated with the aircraft via a choice of 31 radio frequency (RF) channels. The CASS's hydrophone dropped to one of two predetermined operating depths after the buoy deployed. The SSQ-50A configuration of the system has an operating lifetime of one hour; SSQ-50B lifetime is 30 minutes.
