The Type 2053 is a side-scan sonar used by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office for inshore survey work. Based on the Type 2034 sonar that is also in use with the Hydrographic Office, its system was developed for the civilian market under the name Sonar 3000.
The system is of modular construction, which simplified the addition of a color-display monitor, a data-cassette recorder and high-resolution thermal linescan printer to meet the needs of the Royal Navy.
