The U.S. Navy operates several seafloor Sound Surveillance Systems (SOSUS) in various parts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as across the Strait of Gibraltar and off the North Cape north of Norway (the locations of U.S. SOSUS arrays were initially revealed in Soviet magazines).

In the late 1960s, Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara was the first to acknowledge publicly the existence of SOSUS. The system's installation began in the 1950s.
