The CSU 83 (the DBQS-21 in German service) is the primary active/passive classification and tracking sonar for submarines of the German navy. It is also deployed with several foreign navies that have purchased German submarines.
In the active mode, the sonar scans 30-deg sectors to detect and classify targets by measuring their bearing, range, target Doppler and echo amplitude. The information is then passed to the submarine's command system.
