The Combined Active/Passive Towed Array Sonar (CAPTAS) is from the low-frequency active sonar-variable depth sonar (LFAS-VDS) family of systems optimized to exploit the effects of thermal layering in the ocean to achieve maximum range.
Its center frequency is also low enough to reduce the absorption effect of both the seawater and any anechoic covering on a submarine.
