The AN/SQS-38 is a keel-mounted version of the AN/SQS-35 independent variable depth sonar (IVDS). The solid-state sonar was developed specifically to replace the vacuum-tube AN/SQS-36 keel-mounted sonar in the HAMILTON-class Coast Guard cutters. This was the only sonar fitted in U.S. Coast Guard cutters until August 1992 when all SQS-38 sonars were removed from HAMILTON-class cutters.
