The AN/SQR-18 series began with the SQR-18 interim escort towed-array surveillance system (IETASS) that was developed to be a simpler version of the AN/SQR-14/15 long-range towed arrays for frigates and minesweepers.

The escort towed-array sensor (ETAS) program was established in FY 1975 after the IETASS had been tested on U.S. KNOX-class frigates and a minesweeper. In turn, the tactical towed-array sonar (TACTAS) programs were developed from the ETAS.
