AN/AQS-18

The AN/AQS-18 is a long-range, active, dipping sonar for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter use. It is based closely on the AN/AQS-13.

The system detects and maintains contact with underwater targets through a small high-density transducer that can be lowered into or raised from the water from a hovering helicopter at high rates of speed. By employing active echo ranging, a target's range, bearing and opening or closing rate can b e determined.
