The AN/SPS-8 is a height-finding radar that was found in most carriers, battleships, cruisers and specialized radar picket ships (DDR/DER) in the 1950s and 1960s. The radar scans an 11-deg sector of the sky. The "orange peel" antenna emits 650-kW pulses of 1-microsecond duration, with pulse repetit ion frequency (PRF) of 1,000 pulses per second, or of 2-microsecond duration with PRF of 500. The beam is 3.5 degrees x 1.2 degrees.
