The AN/SPS-58/65 began production as the SPS-58 for the detection of anti-ship cruise missiles and target acquisition for the Sea Sparrow point-defense missile system. In the U.S. Navy, it first saw service as part of the Basic Point Defense Missile System (BPDMS) installed in KNOX-class frigates.
