The AN/SPG-53 is a fire-control radar for the Mk 68 gunfire control system for use with Mk 42 5-in (127-mm) dual-purpose guns. It is a modified AN/SPG-48 fire-control radar.
The SPG-53 scans a 12-degree spiral for target acquisition and a 3-degree cone for target tracking; the transition between scanning modes takes approximately 5 seconds.
Later variants provide monopulse tracking and clutter cancellation to allow low-elevation angle tracking.
