The Small Arms Detection System (SADS) is an acoustic detection and direction-finding system, consisting of mast-mounted microphones. It triggers an alarm when sniper or small-arms fire is detected within a 1,090-yd (1,000-m) range and indicates the bearing, azimuth and elevation of the shooter. It can detect both single and multiple round shots. The system can be carried by a single soldier, mounted on a vehicle or stationed at a fixed position.
