OVERVIEW

The state of Israel is bordered to the north by Lebanon, to the northeast by Syria, to the east by Jordan, to the southwest by Egypt and to the west by the Mediterranean Sea. After its founding on May 14, 1948, and the resultant invasion by surrounding countries, Israel and surrounding Arab countries have gone to open war on three occasions: 1956, 1967 and 1973. Israel emerged victorious each time.
