The ELL-8283 gunshot detection system was designed for use by dismounted infantry patrols. It was a persistent, day and night, dual-band infrared electro-optical system designed to detect infrared signal transients.
The system consisted of a detection unit, processor unit, weapon unit and a separate display. The whole system weighed 4 lb (2 kg), including a battery power supply sufficient for eight hours of operation.
