The AN/FPS-88 was a fixed-station, surveillance radar derived from the AN/FPS-8 (no longer in service; see separate database entry). Its signal-processing capability and range was enhanced over that of the FPS-8.
In particular, the FPS-88 gained some electronic counter-countermeasures (ECCM) capability through a smarter radar signal processor and parametric amplifier receiver. The latter had a greatly reduced noise factor.
