Beginning with the AN/FPS-20, several designators have applied to variants of this series of search and ground control intercept (GCI) radars. The system is an upgrade of the AN/FPS-3. Radars in this series use a long pulse width that bathes a target in microwaves. Moving target indicator (MTI) processing screens out background clutter and the radars are designed to resist jamming.

The high-power klystron provides a 2 MW output.
