The AN/ALQ-153 is an airborne, pulse-Doppler radar configured as a tail warning system (TWS). It detects and discriminates approaching missiles and aircraft. Once a threat is identified, the system automatically ejects chaff and flares.
The ALQ-153 replaced the AN/ALQ-127 and introduced a solid-state transmitter, frequency-agile waveform and digital processing in addition to non-scanning antennas with low backlobes.
