A derivative of the British AEW system, the APY-920 is the U.S. designation for an adaptation of the airborne early warning (AEW) system intended to fly aboard the ill-fated Nimrod AEW aircraft.
The electronic systems are similar, but the APY-920 is carried on a modified C-130 Hercules with fore and aft (nose and tail) radomes. An RAF Hercules was modified to act as a flying testbed.
