The development of the Multimode Radar System (MMRS) -- later designated AN/APG-76 -- began in 1984 when Norden won a contract to upgrade 60 Israeli aircraft as part of the Phantom 2000 program.
The MMRS was designed to enhance the air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities of the F-4 Phantom . Fifty units were fitted to aircraft, with 10 kept as spares.
