The Mk 50, formerly known as the Advanced Lightweight Torpedo (ALWT), is the successor to the Mk 46 for use by fixed-wing patrol/anti-submarine warfare (ASW) aircraft, helicopters and surface ships. The Mk 50 is constrained by the need to stay within the Mk 46 's weight and dimensions. Also limiting the Mk 50's dimensions has been the length and width of the S-3A Viking's weapons bay. (Vikings were retired from U.S. Navy fleet service in 2009.)
