The Mk 56 was an aircraft-laid, medium-depth, moored U.S. sea mine which was specifically designed for use against high-speed, deep-operating submarines. It had a non-magnetic, stainless-steel case and was fitted with a magnetic firing mechanism. The weapon's magnetic firing mechanism used a total-field magnetometer to detect targets' presence through disruptions of the Earth's magnetic field.
