The BLU-107/B Durandal was designed by French company Matra to destroy runways. It uses a parachute retard system in a low-level drop, attaining a nose-down attitude and firing a rocket booster to penetrate nearly 16 in (400 mm) below the runway surface. The booster accelerates the weapon to a speed of about 580 mph (260 m/sec). A time-delay fuze detonates the warhead 1 second after impact.
