The Kinetic Energy Interceptor (KEI) weapon was envisioned as part of the Missile Defense Agency's (MDA) boost defense segment (BDS) for the Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS).
The project was officially killed in mid-2009 after US$1.2 billion of work. The Defense Dept. issued a stop-work order in May 2090 and formally terminated the program the next month.
