The Standard surface-to-air missile (SAM) series was developed to replace the trouble-plagued Talos and Terrier as well as the Tartar missiles.

The SM-2MR (medium-range, RIM-66B) has increased range over the SM-1MR (about equal to the range of the SM-2ER) and adds mid-course guidance. It also updated the conical scan semi-active radar terminal guidance to a monopulse semi-active radar and enhanced resistance to electronic countermeasures (ECM).
