The Standard surface-to-air missile (SAM) series was developed to replace the three "T" missiles, the trouble-plagued Talos, Terrier and Tartar. The Standard missile family was the result of an improvement program that began in the late 1950s. The SM-1MR (medium-range) is the oldest Standard type remaining in service, being a relatively short-range weapon with single-stage rocket propulsion (SM-2 and SM-2ER are subjects of separate database entries).
