The advanced medium-range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM) entered service in the early 1990s after being developed jointly by the U.S. Air Force and Navy to succeed the AIM-7 Sparrow III AAM. AMRAAM also was adopted by several other air forces through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program and direct sales.
